Your continuous support helps many families who have experienced a loss of a loved one on Long Island. Thanks to you theses families are allowed to attend the various bereavement programs for free that are funded by the R.L. Sweeney Foundation and cosponsored with Good Shepherd Hospice.

Welcome to Bob Sweeney's Camp H.O.P.E. Website.

The loss of a family member is a very tragic event in a person's life. In 2002, Bob Sweeney, a wonderful husband, father and dear friend to so many, lost his life to cancer, leaving behind three young children. Mr. Sweeney was on hospice care when he passed away. From the outcome of this tragedy, the R. L. Sweeney Memorial Fund joined forces together with the Bereavement Department at Good Shepherd Hospice and Bob Sweeney's Camp H.O.P.E. was created. The mission of the R.L. Sweeney Memorial Fund is to raise funds for bereavement programs to support grieving families on Long Island. The R.L. Sweeney Memorial Fund, Inc. is a not-for-profit 501c(3)
organization.

Thank You!!

For the past year, the students at Howitt Middle School in Farmingdale have been raising money for Bob Sweeney's Camp HOPE. On May 6th I went to the last event the students held (Dance Marathon) where I was given a check for $6,000. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! We are so grateful for all your hard work. A special shout out to Mrs. Lauren Castellane and Mrs. Jane Walsh for teaching your students that it is far more gratifying to give then to receive.

About Our Camp

Bob Sweeney's Camp H.O.P.E. is a FREE 2 day camp for children ages 5 - 17 who have lost an immediate family member. Through the talents of Good Shepherd Hospice, Camp H.O.P.E. is professionally staffed and offers grieving kids and an accompanying caregiver the opportunity to share their feelings in a safe, fun and healthy environment. One of the many benefits for the children who attend this camp is that they will be around other children who are in similar circumstances. Currently, Camp H.O.P.E. is being offered to grieving families once a year. In addition we also host a holiday party for families given in December.

Seeing Darkness Book Cover

Seeing Darkness

For sixteen-year-old Kevin Lloyd, grief is more than just a feeling Like most typical teenagers, Kevin Lloyd's sixteen-year-old life is filled with school, sports, and friends. But on one tragic day, everything changes when Kevin's mother is suddenly killed in a horrific car accident. Wrought with confusion and grief, Kevin is soon faced with another unsettling challenge. He begins to see other people's grief through the darkness that appears in their eyes. Though his grandmother offers him insight into his inherited gift, Kevin feels lost and confused, and rejects the idea that seeing darkness is a gift, attempting instead to control it. However, when he is then confronted with seeing darkness in the eyes of his best friend, Lily, Kevin is torn by what to do. Can he come to a realization that brings the potential of healing to himself and others?

"Seeing Darkness' is a must-read for any teen suffering the loss of a loved one. Using a graphic novel format, this book is written by a grieving teen for other grieving teens in a way that they can relate to. This book is also a great resource for grief professionals and support groups working with teens." -Lynn G. (Widow/Mother)

"A very unique look into what grief is, and how it affects others around you." -Andrew G. (Young Adult) "'Seeing Darkness' is spot on with respect to the feelings one goes through after losing a loved one. I love the story and illustrations, and the Clinical Interpretations provide invaluable information for families on how to cope with one's loss. I wish this book was available during the dark days following my wife's passing." -Howie H. (Widower/Father)
